What is Bioplasty?

They are deeply implanted through a small orifice in the skin, and it is performed without cuts or stitches, using microcanulae, a kind of needles but with a round tip that causes no lesion to the blood vessels or nerves. Biomaterial utilized in Bioplasty

The Polimetilmetacrilate (PMMA) was discovered in Germany in 1902, by a the chemist O. Röhm and it was patented in 1928. It was used for the first time in the health area in 1936. It has been intensively utilized since then in a variety of medical and odontological products.

There is a thirty years old history of the use of polimetilmetacrilate as bone cement, knee implants, intraocular implants. And for more than ten years it has been used as injecting implant in more than two million patients with stability, excellent results and a minimum of complications

The first  use, as an injecting product for tissue increase was performed in 1989 by G. Lemperle and his assistants.

Today the Polimetilmetacrilate or PMMA is a biomaterial approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the trademark Artefill ®.

 

Characteristics of Polimetilmetacrilate (PMMA)

  1. PMMA acts as a bioexpansor, filling the area where it is applied.
  2. It is an injecting implant composed of PMMA microspheres in a non proteic vehicle.
  3. It is biologically inert.
  4. It produces permanent results.
  5. The best results are seen after 30 days of application, because it stimulates the formation of fibroblast, and the production of collagen and elastin. It is applied through atraumatic microcanulae , which is a minimally invasive and secure process. The esthetic results of the patients treated have been highly satisfactory due to their natural aspect. It has caused a change in the self esteem of the patients, letting them to continue with their normal life or, many times, to return to the exercise of their professions.
  6. It has no side effects (intoxication, rejection, cancer).
  7. It does not change its place. It does not alter its form or volume after a time.
  8. It is possible the implanting of more quantity in the same place, if needed.
  9. Alternative refilling products, as hialoronic acid are very expensive and of short duration. The implantation of autologue fat is very complex, especially in patients with VIH, it has to be done in the operation room and its outcome is not predictable, it needs of a number of re-applications and still the result is not sure

How does PMMA act?

In Bioplasty, we use  selected polimetilmetacrilate microspheres that do not vary in size according to an ideal known pattern and they are suspended in a vehicle of programmed viscosity.

The PMMA spheres are purified and selected, they have a standard size, measured by laser sweeping. These spheres are larger than a macrofague, and thus they are not fagocitated ( they do not migrate, do not change of place)

The gel used as a vehicle is absorbed and eliminated, leaving space for a controlled inflammatory reaction that ends by filling its place with collagen. This collagen fixes the biomaterial in its implanted place and makes it impossible to migrate.
