Varicose veins

Varicose veins are circulatory ailments affecting mainly the superficial veins of the legs. They are permanent and pathological swellings of some sick veins which become unpaired for their physiological function.  10% of the population suffers of varicose veins which affects both sexes, although in a proportion of 7 to 1 in women.

The cause for the apparition of varicose veins is 80 % of genetical or hormonal origin (according to world statistics), but there are also some other causes: pregnancy, obesity and some types of activities in which the person remains standing for a prolonged time.  It is an ailment that does not respect sex, color, social class, or age.  Usually it will appear after the 18 years, very seldom before that age.

Besides the aesthetic problem, those suffering of varicose veins present other malfunctions that contribute to diminish their life quality. Some of these malfunctions are heaviness of the legs, cramps and itching.

According to our medical experience, the two more effective methods for the treatment of varicose veins are: the Sclerotherapy and microsurgery for varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive and non surgical procedure.  It consists in eliminating the varicose veins from circulation through the injection of different substances.  It is an ambulatory technique, and according to the case, it can be performed in one or more sessions with permanent results.  Nevertheless it is possible that, after a time, new varicose veins may appear.  In this case, the apparition of any small varicose vein can be eliminated in another treatment session.

The Microsurgery for varicose veins is a technique in which employing local anesthesia, micro incisions are made in the skin in order to take out the dilated varicose veins.  This method allows the patient’s quick reincorporation to his or her normal life.  The wearing of compression stockings for, at least, two weeks after the treatment is recommended.
