Otoplasty or ear surgery

Ears are one of the most important characteristics in the definition of the human face.  The alterations of the size, form, and disposition of the ear pavilion constitute an important source of aesthetic worrying and sometimes it becomes a psychological trauma since childhood.  From a medical point of view it is recommended that when the defect is very prominent, it is advisable its correction before school age in order to avoid psychological troubles that could mark the individual’s future personality.

This surgery can be performed since the age of six, because by this age the ear pavilion is considered to have practically reached its adult size and configuration.

Otoplasty or ear surgery can modify the form and the size of the ears and give them a better aspect, reducing the projection of the prominent ears and correcting the irregular contour of the ear.

According to the patient’s age and the surgeon’s ability, otoplasty can be carried out with local or general anesthesia.  In most of the cases, incisions are made in the back part of the ear leaving practically no visible scare.  Through this incision the surgeon carefully change the form of the ear cartilage so that it may fold in the adequate places.  Despite its apparent simplicity, it is a surgical procedure that requires the experience of a suitable medical professional used to details and to the performing of works of delicate nature in the areas of health and aesthetic.

Once an otoplasty is carried out it has permanent results.  Sometimes it will require of an additional retouching.  Complications of the cartilage or of the skin are rare.
